This highlight has notable historic and architectural significance. It is worth walking past the immense old building of Bogambra prison in central Kandy to view its setting and to imagine the scene when the prison was in operation.
Bogambara prison was the second largest prison in Sri Lanka. It housed serious offenders and death row prisoners. The prison closed in 2014 after operating for 138 years.
Bogambara is the longest building in Asia built on a single foundation (it was built during the period when Great Britain ruled Ceylon).
At the time of writing plans are underway to convert Bogambara into an international five-star hotel whilst maintaining the building’s historic and architectural value.
