Groot Schijn originates in Westmalle, then flows through the Voorkempen and is pumped into the Albert Canal at the Schijnpoort in Deurne. From east to west, the area changes from rural and quite natural to an urban, industrial environment.

Due to pollution of the water and the great paving pressure in the area, Groot Schijn found it difficult. The recent drought periods have further exacerbated these problems.
