Tietje nursed, watched over the dying and also laid down people. In addition, she helped with slaughter when necessary.
She preferred to go out to work rather than do household chores or help in the fields; she absolutely hated making hay or milking a cow.
She was a very socially committed woman, had a very good nature, but was certainly not shy about her words. If she knew people couldn't pay her, she would do her work for free. Then she made the rich farmers pay a little more. “They have enough money,” she would say.
Her credo: 'I help people into the world and away from it again'.
To bake / to bring into the world:
She gave birth to almost half of Zeijen. It is not known how she learned this trade, but she probably learned it by doing. And she was very good at it, because Vries' GP had so much confidence in her that he once said: 'If Tietje can't make it, then there isn't much help left for me.'
Schierschonen / helping with the slaughter:
Tietje also helped with the slaughter and the cleaning: that is, cleaning the intestines of the slaughtered animal. If a pig or cow was slaughtered at a farmer's house, she would help process the meat.
To discard / to get rid of the world:
She watched over people who were dying so that close relatives could sleep for the night. If someone had died, she would discard the deceased. Then she often said: 'Oh, how beautiful I have her/him again'. She took pride in her work.
After she stopped taking the dead, she was the first to die.
She died on August 13, 1950 and is buried in the cemetery in Vries. She was 76 years old.
