    The Walloon-Dutch Church in Hanau was the double church of the Reformed denomination of the Neustadt Hanau, founded in 1597 by Count Philipp Ludwig II of Hanau-Münzenberg for religious refugees from France and the Spanish Netherlands.
    The foundation stone was laid on April 9, 1600, to which famous personalities such as Friedrich IV and Luise Juliana of Orange were invited. The construction work was marked by a constant lack of money and technical difficulties. The Walloon-Dutch Church in Hanau was dominated by the huge pitched roofs of the two halves of the church. The larger Walloon church was formed from a dodecagon, the smaller Dutch one from an octagon. Both were intertwined. Between the two churches, in the middle of the partition wall, stood the octagonal tower, which was relatively subordinate to the huge hipped roofs. Inside, both churches were simply furnished as Reformed houses of God.

      For me the highlight in Hanau!
      The Walloon-Dutch Church in Hanau was the double church of the Reformed denomination of Neustadt Hanau, founded by Count Philipp Ludwig II of Hanau- Münzenberg for religious refugees from France and the Spanish Netherlands. The exterior work was completed with the first service on October 29, 1608, the interior work continued for several years. After the destruction in World War II, only the smaller, formerly Dutch half of the church was rebuilt.

        Today, the archway of the FORUM shopping and cultural center marks the transition from the first to the second Hanau. Through it I get to the pedestrian zone and the really big market square, which I cross diagonally to disappear into the hidden and totally convoluted market passage, which spits me out on the brand new designed square in front of the Walloon-Dutch church: Because everything is in Hanau is double, the people of Neustadt also built a double church, one for services in Dutch and one for masses in French. However, because they shared the same faith, they intertwined the buildings and shared the bell tower. When both churches were destroyed after the war, the congregations merged and only rebuilt the smaller of the two churches, while the other remained in ruins as a memorial - a truly unique building constellation that is to be honored by the new square design.
