The city of 16,000 inhabitants on the upper Tiber is located in the far east of Tuscany. Sansepolcro was probably founded at the beginning of the 11th century. According to legend, two holy pilgrims, Arcanus and Aegidius, stopped in this valley on their return from the Holy Land and, by a divine sign, they decided to stay and build a small chapel to house the holy relics they had brought with them from Jerusalem , to keep.
Sansepolcro Cathedral, officially a co-cathedral, has ancient origins, having been founded more than 1,000 years ago as a Benedictine abbey on the pilgrimage routes to preserve the aforementioned relic of the Holy Sepulchre.

Tradition has it that the city was founded around the 10th century by two pilgrims returning from the Holy Land. To preserve the relics from the Holy Sepulchre, they built an oratory with an adjoining hospital for pilgrims. The town of Borgo San Sepolcro was born around these buildings, later transformed into Sansepolcro. The current appearance of the center is from the Renaissance period, parts of the city walls built by the Medici family are still present.
