The Marienfeld has been used since September 2004 for the vigil on August 20th and the final mass of World Youth Day on August 21st, 2005, both celebrated together with Pope Benedict XVI. were celebrated, prepared for up to a million participants. After the groundbreaking ceremony on March 31, 2005, the so-called Pope's Hill was built for church services. Joachim Cardinal Meisner named this 10 meter high embankment for the altar the Mountain of 70 Nations because delegates from 70 countries had placed earth from their countries there at the beginning of 2005. Around 80,000 m³ of earth was piled up for the Pope's Hill in 55 days. The hill has a base area of 15,000 m² and an upper altar and seating area of 3,500 m² to accommodate approximately 2,000 people. After the end of World Youth Day, the installations around the Marienfeld were dismantled by December 2005, the Pope's Hill was preserved and will continue to be used as a local recreation area.

The statues of the Three Magi (Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar), which line the rear entrance to the so-called Pope's Hill on the Marienfeld, are represented here primarily because the motto of the XX World Youth Day - the closing service of which was celebrated here - was: "We have come to worship HIM". This text extract comes from the Gospel according to Matthew (Chapter 2) and is spoken - with the preceding words "We saw his star rise and ..." - by the wise men from the East who want to visit the newborn King of the Jews, Jesus Christ. The biblical text does not refer to them as kings and does not mention the names or number of men, the latter being deduced from the three gifts (gold, frankincense and myrrh). Their relics have been in Cologne since 1165 and are still venerated there today.
