On the northern slope of the Berger Ridge, the area extends from the Berger Warte along the edge of the Vilbel Forest. In 2004, the state of Hesse registered the 29 hectare area as a flora-fauna-habitat area (FFH) with the European Union.
The area was designated a “NATURA 2000 area” by legal regulation in 2008.
designated and is therefore part of the EU-wide network of European protected areas. The aim is to preserve the character of natural limestone dry grasslands and poor lowland hay meadows. A particularly attractive part is the “orchid slope”. Species of orchids such as helmet orchid, mosquito-handwort and the greater two-leaf grow in this approximately 1.3 hectare area. Field man's litter and thorny hackle are pleasing to the eye and even the swamp gladiolus - which is considered extinct/lost in Hesse - can be found here.
In the adjoining meadows you can admire a sea of cowslips in spring and in early autumn purple carpets of autumn crocuses spread out. This part of the FFH area is a worthwhile excursion destination at any time of the year.
