The castle, which was built by the Counts of Dassel or the Guelph Dukes in the 13th century at the latest, was the main residence of the Dukes of Grubenhagen / Braunschweig until the 15th century. The castle had been uninhabited since the 17th century and was becoming increasingly derelict. It collapsed around 1800 and lived as a ruin. 1983 to 1988 this was completely renovated. The Burgförderverein Heldenburg looks after the castle and has been organizing excavations, castle services and events such as castle festivals since 1984. Visits to the castle complex are made possible by the tourist information in Einbeck and the Heldenburg Castle Association.

At the castle tavern, the visitor arrives at the Gothic entrance gate, but the signs here direct them to the moat, which also serves as a parking lot. Here you can get extensive information about the history and elements of the castle ruins using the numerous information boards. After a short semicircle of approx. 200 meters you will find yourself on the back of the castle hill and already enjoy wonderful views of the Leinetal. A few more steps uphill you enter the castle courtyard. This looks very well-kept and is well stocked with benches and other information boards. From said east wall one looks down over the Salzderheldener half-timbered houses on the Leine, from the south side far over the Leinepolder to Northeim. The former castle chapel is set up as an open-air chapel - here people are sure to say yes on a regular basis.

The Heldenburg, also known as Salzderhelden Castle, is a ruined castle above the town of Salzderhelden in southern Lower Saxony. It served to protect the salt well at the foot of the castle complex, from which the Salzderhelden salt works developed. Between 1291 and 1596 it was the residence and at times the main residence of the dukes of the Guelph Principality of Grubenhagen.

Great castle ruins with lots to discover and beautiful photo opportunities, benches invite you to rest and enjoy the view. The area is very well maintained and you can fortify yourself for the rest of the tour in the castle tavern.
