Haltern am See can look back on more than 2000 years of history, the beginnings of which go back to Roman times:

When Roman troops marched up the lip during the Germania campaigns under Emperor Augustus with the aim of making Germania a Roman province, the area around Haltern also became a military base. As is well known, this plan failed due to the uprising of the Teutons under Arminius in the "Varus Battle" in AD 9. Traces of Roman presence have been found in extraordinarily high concentration due to the extensive excavations since the end of the 19th century. In addition to the finds from other military facilities on the Lippe, they are exhibited in the LWL Roman Museum and are an eloquent testimony to Roman life during this period.
In modern times, water became an essential structural element. Around 1930 the Haltern reservoir was created with a capacity of approx. 20 million cbm.

Another dam with a reservoir capacity of 10 million cbm near Hullern was completed in 1985. Many communities from Duisburg to Münster are now supplied with the Haltern water. The Haltern water and forest landscapes with the seaside resort, the silver lakes and a wide range of sports and leisure opportunities are the destination of countless people looking for relaxation from far and wide and are rightly considered the "green lung of the Ruhr area".
