The old town of Kolobrzeg is an example of a successful revitalization of a district that was almost completely destroyed in the Battle of Kolberg in March 1945. Until the end of the 1960s, there was almost nothing at the site of the old medieval town center except for the ruins of the cathedral, the powder tower from the fifteenth century and the aforementioned neo-Gothic town hall from 1832. In 1970 an architectural competition for the redevelopment of the inner city of Kolobrzeg took place. The winning design provided for 12-story prefabricated buildings for the old town. The implementation of the project has already started. Fortunately, the work dragged on to such an extent that in 1984 it was possible to take a different path. After completion of the archaeological work, the destroyed old town should be built with small houses, whereby the medieval road network should be retained. The new houses were meant to be a reminder of the past days, but they were not supposed to be copies of the old buildings; the old foundations should be used if possible. Only the cathedral was completely reconstructed.
