Silenced Voices - The Expulsion of the “Jews” from the Opera 1933 to 1945 is an exhibition project by the historian Hannes Heer, the music critic Jürgen Kesting and the designer Peter Schmidt. Since 2006, the exhibition has been commemorating the victims of Nazi racial politics in German and Austrian opera houses. It consists of a national part and a local part. The national part tells the fate of 44 prominent composers, conductors, directors and singers who became victims of the racist music policy of National Socialism. In the local part, the history of the expulsion from the respective opera house is reconstructed.

Balance sheet
The protective claim that Richard Wagner was abused by the National Socialists is only partially true. As little as there is a direct connection between Wagner and Hitler, he was an important source of inspiration for him. But it was his heirs who first established a direct political connection: through the defamation and exclusion of Jewish artists, through the misuse of the festival and through their participation in the most important anti-Semitic-anti-democratic organizations after 1914, they prepared the ground for the state-run organization in the Third Reich Expulsion of Jewish and politically unacceptable artists. That is the thesis of this exhibition.
