Despite its small size, Kranenburg has a large Gothic cathedral. This Peter and Paul Church has been a Catholic pilgrimage site for more than 700 years because of the legend of the Holy Cross.

To raise money to repair the roof, the pastor of the church sold a holy water container to an art dealer in 1908. He sold it on for five times the amount. The buyer was bank billionaire J.P. Morgan, who donated it to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York after his death. The ivory bowl appears to date from the 9th century and is of inestimable value.

This imposing Gothic church towers over the center of Kranenburg and tells a remarkable story: pilgrims have been coming here since the 14th century for the "Miraculous Cross." Be sure to stop by. Not only for the tranquility and the stained-glass windows, but also for the unique atmosphere of a centuries-old pilgrimage church.
