The fountain with the water carrier standing in front of the town hall is the city's landmark. A young girl stands walking on a pedestal, carrying a stool on her shoulders from which two buckets of water hang. The monument was created in 1938 in honor of the women who, when Schöningen was suffering from the hardest water in Germany, brought buckets of “soft” water from the few public fountains into the houses so that housewives could cook and wash, what with the hard Water was not possible.

Schöningen had Germany's hardest water. For example, it was almost impossible to wash clothes with it.
Coffee, on the other hand, tasted excellent. The fountain with the "Schöningen Water Maiden", built in 1938, commemorates the women who fetched water from four soft water wells until the middle of the 20th century. They used the "Schanne" (carrying log) to carry the heavy water buckets home. In addition, water trucks from the surrounding area delivered soft water to households. It was not until 1959 that Schöningen was connected to the soft water pipeline. A well house reconstructed by Schöningen citizens in 1998 can be seen on the castle square. (Source: sign)
