To defend the entrance to the Hollands Diep, two gun casemates of the type 669 were built on the old ramparts of Bastion Holland in Willemstad. During the Second World War, Willemstad was part of the Stützpunktgruppe Ooltgensplaat of the Atlantic Wall.

Willemstad is one of William of Orange's most strategically located fortified towns. Willemstad is one big monument. In 1874, Willemstad became the center of the Defense Line of the Hollandsch Diep and the Volkerak. It had to protect Holland against troops who wanted to cross the Hollandsch Diep from Brabant and close access for ships to the Hollandsch Diep. The fortress has bastions, soldiers' houses, a barracks, powder magazines and bunkers.
