When the monastery was founded in the 12th century, the older church was rebuilt, with the core of the church being in Romanesque style. Extensive restoration work was carried out between 1886 and 1887, giving it its current appearance.

Not many Romanesque buildings have survived the upheavals of the centuries. St. Nicholas' Church, built in 1180, is all the more impressive because the unique architectural style of the turn of the first millennium is still impressively visible here, despite some renovations.
The imposing St. Nicholas' Church served as a parish church for the people of Eisenach and as a monastery church for the Benedictines. The three-aisled Romanesque basilica, together with the Nikolaitor, dominates the image of Karlsplatz and leaves an incomparable impression at first sight. The church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, received its current external appearance at the end of the 19th century. Builders from the Wartburg must have worked here during the construction of the church. One of the high-quality capitals on a southern pillar indicates this.
An altar carved around 1500, depicting the Lamentation of Christ, comes from Thuringia. Modern gold-yellow stained glass windows, designed by the glass artist Wolfgang Nickel, make the church shine and also invite contemplative meditation. A visit to the church is recommended for many good reasons.
