Already at the beginning of the 12th century there was a church (in Romanesque style, in Tournai stone) in Welden, the patronage of which came into the possession of the Abbey of Ename in 1110.
Changes in a late Gothic sense took place in the 17th century.
From around 1870-1871 the church was enlarged and modified in neo-Romanesque style.

Saint Martin ("Saint Martin") lived in the fourth century. The legend surrounding him is that he donated half his cloak as alms to a beggar. The next night he is said to have seen Christ in a vision, with half of his mantle wrapped around him, addressing him, "What you have done for the least of my brethren, you have done to me"... the impetus for to go through life as a follower of Bishop Hilary of Poitiers (and, among other things, as an exorcist). He later became Bishop of Tours himself.

On November 11, the feast day of St. Martin, he is celebrated in some regions (including around Aalst) as a friend of children, similar to how Sinterklaas is celebrated in other regions.

Two more facts:
* In the cemetery next to the church is the grave monument of Mgr. Lambrecht, XXIIIth Bishop of Ghent, born in Welden.
* The church of nearby Meilegem is also dedicated to the same Saint Martin.
