The Trappist monastery was founded in 1880 as a refuge for French monks, who originally came from West Flanders. However, their survival was threatened by anti-church legislation, and they were safe in Brabant. The monastery is located on a beautiful estate, and a monastic community still lives and works there.

De Koningshoeven Abbey
All La Trappe beers are developed and brewed here in collaboration with the Trappists of O.L.V. van Koningshoeven Abbey.

There are only seven Trappist beers worldwide that are allowed to carry the Authentic Trappist Product logo. Six of these come from Belgium, one from the Netherlands and that is La Trappe. Only if the beer is brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery under the supervision and responsibility of the monks, it may bear the name 'Trappist beer'. Part of the proceeds from the La Trappe beers go to the monasteries in Indonesia and Uganda that originated from Koningshoeven.
When the Trappists settled near Tilburg, things initially did not go so well. They rented three farms from a factory owner, but the land was poor and the work did not yield enough to live on. One of the first fathers was the son of a brewer from Munich and started a brewery.

Trappists still live and work in the abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven. The abbey is a household name in the wider area, partly because of the Trappist beer that is brewed here. But cheese is also made. You can taste the products in the tasting room and you can buy them in the monastery shop.
