Presumably around 1141 Maria Mendartental (Martyldal) was founded by the Augustinerchorherrenstift Springiersbach.
Since 1212 only Augustinian nuns have been found in Martental.
The chapel of the 10,000 martyrs, which collapsed in 1817, became the destination of a pilgrimage.

The Redemptorist Father Josef Tillmann bought the property in 1905 and built a monastery building with a chapel in 1908.
In 1927, the Priests Brotherhood of Sacred Heart of Sittard took over the monastery. In 1934 they built a new pilgrimage church. 1941 to 1945, the plant was misappropriated as a land service yard of the Hitler Youth. The Sacred Heart Priests rebuilt the monastery after the war. In 1960 the new church was consecrated and extended in 1973/74. The Sanctuary, celebrating the Feast of the Seven Sorrows of Mary on 15 September as a patron saint with a festive week, is still very popular.

"Martental" probably goes back to the old name "Valley of the Martyrs".
