Originally, Schaag did not have its own place of worship. The residents had to go to the parish church in neighboring Breyell to attend the service. Since the route became too difficult, in 1707 the then pastor of Breyell, Theodor Korten, the mayor and the lay judges requested the sovereign, Duke Johann Wilhelm II of Jülich and Berg, and the Bishop of Liège to build a chapel in Schaag. After approval from the church and the state, the chapel was built in the same year. The building was expanded in 1788 and 1822 due to the steadily increasing population. In 1804 Schaag became an independent parish and the chapel also became a parish church.

In the middle of the 19th century it was decided to build a new parish church. After a suitable property had been found, the parish commissioned the Cologne master builder Vincenz Statz to plan the new church. After the building application was approved in 1863, construction of today's church began. The foundation stone was laid on July 7, 1863 and after two years of construction, the new church was consecrated on July 10, 1865. The old church has since been demolished.

A fundamental renovation took place between 1977 and 1978. In 1985 the interior received its current painting. The celebration altar was consecrated on September 2, 1990 by the Aachen Bishop Klaus Hemmerle.
