Before the chapel was built, Amorsbrunn near Amorbach was a spring cult site, probably of Roman or Germanic origin.

Irish wandering monks, brought to the country by Gaugraf Ruthard, are said to have Christianized the Odenwald here in the 8th century. In the 12th century at the latest, a Romanesque church was built over the spring, the remains of which are still in the building today. Even when it is dry, the spring pours out 4 liters of water per second. Up until the 17th century, the Amorsbrunner water was said to have various miraculous healing effects. It was considered to be a healing water against childlessness and eye diseases.

At the beginning of the 16th century, the chapel had to be expanded due to the large number of pilgrims. In particular, the vaulted chancel with the colored, late Gothic winged altar depicting the family tree of Mary was added at this time. Since 1535 there has been a painted image of Christopherus on the outer choir wall. To the left of the chapel is a sandstone pulpit and a baroque Marian column from 1720.

Also in the 16th century, a "spa" was built to the right of the chapel, which was covered until the 18th century. It is still fed with the running water from the chapel.
