St. Peter and Paul Church of Herne...
The 4 windows on either side of the superstructure of the nave still bear witness to the Romanesque church from the 11th or 12th century. In October 1211, the first charter of Hainaut was granted to Herne by the Lord of Edingen in the church...
In the second half of the 13th century, construction continued in the Brabantine Scheldt Gothic style. This was when the choir, the substructure of the nave, the right aisle and the tower were created... The Gothic tower has a hexagonal turret on the four corners.
In 1440, the tower was struck by lightning, after which it was rebuilt by Vanden Bossche, who was staying in the Carthusian monastery at the time...
In 1566 and 1588, it suffered from the violence of iconoclasts and beggars. The beam above the portal is a reminder of the restoration in 1598 by order of the abbot of Saint-Aubertus in Cambrai...
Through extensive renovations (in 1923-24) the church acquired an asymmetrical floor plan...
