Puka Pukara (also Puca Pucara) comes from the indigenous language Quechua and means “Red Fortress”, which was probably derived from the red color of the stones - especially at dusk. These are the ruins of an Inca fortification in Peru. Little is known about the history of Puka Pukara. The fortress was most likely one of many permanent stations where Inca relay runners were exchanged or goods were stored and which provided accommodation for military troops, traveling merchants and pilgrims
