Hanns Reiffenstuel (* 1548 in Gmund am Tegernsee; † June 29, 1620 probably there) was a German court master builder (more precisely court well and master carpenter) from Bavaria. Born in Gmund am Tegernsee, Hanns Reiffenstuel[1] was an innkeeper and master builder. He had been court architect to Duke Maximilian I of Bavaria since 1597, but had already rendered great service under his father, Duke Wilhelm IV. From 1617 to 1619, together with his son, Simon Reiffenstuel, master carpenter at the court, he managed the construction of the brine pipeline from Bad Reichenhall to Traunstein. The more than 30-kilometre-long saltwater pipeline overcame the approximately 250 meters in altitude using seven pumping stations ("Brunnhäuser"), the piston pumps of which were driven by water wheels seven meters high. At that time there were already brine lines to the Ebensee Saline on Lake Traunsee in the Salzkammergut; however, these used the natural gradient and therefore required no pumps. In 1619 Hanns Reiffenstuel retired, his son Simon Reiffenstuel died a few months before him in Gmund. The Reichenhall-Traunstein brine line was in operation until 1912, and its extension to Rosenheim, which had existed since 1810, was in operation until 1958. Today, near Lake Thumsee near Bad Reichenhall, you can follow a themed hiking trail along the dikes (wooden pipes) and past the "well houses" on the route of the "world's first pipeline" and thus follow in Reiffenstuel's footsteps. Also at various other places along the old route there are indications, drawbars that can be visited and other traces of the historic brine pipelines, e.g. B. near Weißbach an der Alpenstraße, Siegsdorf, Traunstein and Rosenheim.
