Legend has it that during the Turkish invasions, the locals hid behind the walls at the top of Šmarna gora, and the Turks decided that they had to reach the top by noon, otherwise they would turn around and go somewhere else. The hidden farmers heard about the Turkish decision and saved themselves by ringing the noon bell half an hour earlier on the top of Šmarna gora. The Turks, who were convinced that it was noon, turned around in the middle of the hill, and the Turkish sign still stands at this place today. Also, in memory of those times, the bells of Šmarnogorsk still ring half an hour early at noon.
