Thierlstein Castle

The founders of the castle are the Thierlinger people, who also gave it its name. They were originally ministerials of the Margraves of Cham, but with the death of the Counts of Bogen in 1242, the Thierlingers became Bavarian.
Thierlstein Castle was only built around 1360 under the name Lichtenstein. The name refers to the bright quartz rock on which the castle stands; it is part of the Pfahl, a 150 kilometer long quartz vein that is also found in Weißenstein.

In 1365 Stephanus de Türlstein was named in a papal document. Other owners are Ebo 1374 and Erasmus 1384. They took on nursing positions for the Bavarian Duke, including Stefan II in 1411 as a nurse in Cham and Ulrich II, who was a nurse in Neunburg. But from 1488 onwards, Hans II took part in the Löwler uprising against the duke and had to give Thierlstein to his son as punishment. The castle becomes a Bavarian court mark and loses its importance. In the 16th century, the Thierlingers became Protestant; the last representative, Georg Bernhardt Thierlinger, died in 1620 in the Battle of White Mountain in the Thirty Years' War. Thereafter, frequent changes of ownership, today owned by the Barons von Schacky.

What remains of the medieval castle is primarily the palace on the rock, which is protected by a well-preserved round keep on the attack side. This has a diameter of 6 meters, walls that are 2 meters thick and is made of rubble stones. The pointed arched entrance is 12 meters high. The “living area” is just as tiny as the tower on the Treffelstein castle ruins.
In the 16th century the surrounding buildings were added and appear to fill an earlier kennel. Further renovations followed, with a baroque design in the 18th century, a neo-Gothic redesign in 1894, and renovations in 1972 and 1989. Numerous late medieval finds were made during the excavations and a drawbridge was also found on the south side next to the keep. The floor plan, the outer walls and the illustration by Appian suggest that a tiny, square courtyard used to separate the keep from the residential building, which was only built over later.
There is now a castle brewery on the outer bailey grounds, and the rooms there can be rented for celebrations. The castle itself is privately owned and not accessible.
