This historic Martello Tower, one of many built along the Irish coastline during the 19th century to guard against potential Napoleonic invasions, gained literary fame when James Joyce set the opening scene of his masterpiece, "Ulysses," within its stout stone walls.

Each floor of the tower has been meticulously restored to capture the atmosphere of Joyce's era. Original letters, photographs, and personal possessions of the author are on display, offering a glimpse into his life and work. James Joyce shot. He stayed for six days in 1904 with his friend and fellow artist St. John Gogarty in the Martello Tower here in Dun Laoghaire. The story is a bit confused: an acquaintance of Gogarty also lived in the tower and had bad dreams. Black panthers grabbed him, Trench started screaming, woke up, grabbed his revolver and fired a few shots into the fireplace. A few hours later, Trench had another bad dream and screamed. Gogarty yelled "leave him to me" and shot pans on the board above Joyce's cot. Joyce became alarmed and left the tower the next day. With this scene begins the Ulysses...
