It is impressive and frightening at the same time how close the memorial and cenotaph are to each other. This is certainly being discussed locally.

It is worth not only climbing the tower and enjoying the beautiful view and looking at the ship models in the museum, but also entering the flag room in the tower and the underground memorial under the square between the tower and the museum.

The naval memorial in Laboe is a memorial to those of all nations who remained at sea and is also a memorial for peaceful seafaring on free seas.

The tower is 85 m high and is a visible landmark on the eastern Kiel Fjord. If you want to climb the viewing platform on foot, you have to climb 341 steps or would you rather use one of two elevators...? Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with a great view!
On a clear day you can even see Denmark 😊...

Laboe is known throughout Germany not only for the naval memorial but also for its "U-boat on the beach". And again and again the question is asked: "How did it get there?". On September 16, 1943, U-995 was put into service under the name "Hecht" in the Hamburg shipyard "Blohm & Voss". It belonged to the Type VII C, of which a total of 693 units were completed by 1945. Until its decommissioning on May 8, 1945 in Drontheim, Norway, U-995 was mainly used in the North Sea.

A MUST on a tour to and in Laboe. Impressive and imposing building. After a visit, the history of this memorial is etched in your memory and you won't forget it in a hurry! U 995 was built in 1943 at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in |
Hamburg built. It belongs to the Vllc/41 type, of which

When the Germans surrendered in May 1945, U 995 fell undamaged into the hands of the Allies, who later handed the submarine over to the Norwegian Navy. After being decommissioned in 1962, U 995 was returned from Norway to the Federal Republic of Germany as a sign of reconciliation and, after restoration in 1972, was set up as a technical museum in front of the naval memorial.
U 995 is the last surviving Type VIIc submarine, reminiscent of the horrors of submarine warfare, which claimed thousands of lives on both sides. Of the
around 40,000 German U-boatmen of the Second World War.
30,000 died during World War II.

Two elevators or 341 steps lead to an observation platform, from which, on a clear day, a unique panoramic view stretches across the Baltic Sea to the Danish islands,
the Fehmarnsund Bridge, and the hills of Holstein Switzerland.

The planning of the memorial, built on the site of a former tank turret, dates back to an idea from 1925. It was inaugurated on May 30, 1936, after almost seven years of construction. The construction costs of almost 700,000 Reichsmarks were covered primarily by donations from members of naval associations and the Naval Officers' Association. In addition to the striking tower, the complex also includes an underground memorial hall, the Historical Hall, with numerous ship models and other exhibits relating to naval and shipping history, as well as a 7,000-square-meter square of honor paved with Weser sandstone. Today, the complex is one of the few architectural examples of Expressionism in Germany.

From 1993 to 1998, the complex underwent extensive renovation.

In parallel with the construction work, a careful review of the memorial's content was carried out in close cooperation with competent historians in order to clarify misleading representations while preserving historical context and to update the overall message in a dignified and appropriate form.

This process, which is not yet complete but will continue to be subject to constant change in the future, also includes the establishment of the memorials for the German Navy and Civil Shipping in 1996. In addition to the Bundeswehr Memorial
at the Federal Ministry of Defense in Berlin, all naval personnel who died at sea are officially commemorated in Laboe.

As a memorial and monument, more than 100,000 visitors visit the Naval Memorial every year. From both the water and the land, the Naval Memorial dominates the surrounding landscape. The tall tower, with its boldly rising line from the landward side, often inspires comparisons to a sail, a submarine conning tower, or a ship's bow. Rather, the architect Gustav August Munzer intended it to symbolize a "flame rising toward heaven."
