Directly behind the Mülheim Bridge lie the Rhine floodplains, a green, open area along the Rhine. After nightfall, the floodplains appear tranquil and somewhat mysterious. From here, there is a fantastic view of the illuminated Mülheim Bridge, its lights reflected in the water.

The book “GRÜNGÜRTEL-RUNDWEG” by Steffi Machnik (Verlag Gaasterland, ISBN 9783935873628) offers directions – and, above all, background information:
"The Outer Green Belt in Cologne, created in the 1920s by Mayor Konrad Adenauer and the Hamburg-born city planner Fritz Schumacher on the site of the former Prussian fortifications, is an urban green system that is unique in Central Europe. The green belt circular path has been running since 2015 over a length of 63 kilometers through this listed landscape park. Forest and meadow alternate, but also motorways, railway tracks and factory halls characterize the marked route on the right and left of the Rhine. Divided into ten stages, the start and finish of which can be easily reached by public transport , all facets of Cologne can be hiked; either as a walk or several stages as a longer day tour. Descriptions of the sights along the green belt circular route and beautiful places to stop for refreshments make the book a practical companion for exploring the almost 100-year-old outer green belt with all your senses to experience and learn to know and appreciate its value as a sustainable recreational area and a defining element of Cologne's urban design."
