First mentions of the castle date back to the 12th century. At the end of the 12th century Frederick Barbarossa had the original castle complex extended to the imperial palace. 1652 was by Erlas Emperor Ferdinand III. the conversion of the Cheb castle to a border fortress, thus Eger received the status of a fortified city, which at that time in the entire kingdom of Bohemia was only Prague.
