The Fort National was built at the end of the 17th century on a small fortified island of Saint-Malo, designed by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, known as the «fortress builder» of Louis XIV.
After the French Revolution, the fort served as a prison for a long time.
Today parts of the fortification can be visited, at low tide a footpath leads over. The tides should be kept in mind, because at high tide you are stuck on the island.

After the French Revolution, the fort served as a prison for a long time. Today parts of the fortification can be visited via a footpath at low tide. Check the tide calendar to avoid getting stuck on the island at high tide.
