      At an extraordinary general meeting at the end of October 2012, the members of the Urnerboden alpine dairy cooperative approved the construction of the Urnerboden alpine dairy without opposition. The planning phase, which started in September 2006, came to a preliminary conclusion with the implementation decision. The official groundbreaking ceremony for the 6.4 million franc construction project took place yesterday. The shell of the building is expected to be completed by August. If everything goes according to plan, the first Alpine cheeses will be pulled out of the casserole in June 2014 and will be ready for the Swiss national holiday in 2014.

        «A unique project»
        A total of 52 alpine farmers are involved in the Alpkäserei Urnerboden AG, which was founded in March 2012. Most of them come from the Schächental and from the communities of Altdorf, Schattdorf and Bürglen. "The Urnerboden alpine cheese dairy is a unique project," said Anton Gisler, Chairman of the Board of Directors, at the groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, which he described as a "milestone in history". In terms of size, only the cheese dairy on Schwägalp can keep up to some extent with that on Urnerboden. In full operation, more than 1 million kilograms of alpine milk can be processed into almost 100 tons of alpine cheese on the Urnerboden every summer.
