Construction of the chapel began in 1605.
The Ticino artist Martino Retti is the author of the sculptures of John the Baptist and Zacharias in the niches of the porch.
The statues of the scene in the interior have recently been attributed to Marco Antonio Prestinari (around 1615), brother of Cristoforo. He had already worked on the sculptural group on the Monte, which is kept in the oratory of the Immaculate Conception.
The frescoes by Carlo
Francesco Nuvolone (1658) represent the Adoration of the Magi, the Annunciation to the Shepherds, the Massacre of the Innocents, the Preparation for the Flight into Egypt and the Annunciation of the Angel to Joseph, while the quadrature paintings are the work of the Varese painter Francesco Villa.
On the external wall, in 1983,
Renato Guttuso painted the Flight into Egypt.
