The story of the poppy fields probably came about like this: "Over a glass of beer in the pub, Marco Lenarduzzi, managing director of the Meissner-Kaufunger Wald nature park, and Björn Sippel, landlord of the Meissnerhof in Germerode, came up with the crazy idea of poppy fields. Sippel already ran an oil mill and produced rapeseed oil. He soon discovered that the poppy thing was a bit more complicated. It was difficult to get hold of opium poppy seeds at all. Not everyone can just sow them, even as an allotment gardener you have to submit an application to the Federal Opium Office, as the plant produces a milky sap containing morphine, from which opium can be made.

The opium poppy is demanding. It requires a fresh bed. Poppies can only be sown on the same field again after three to four years. So the farmers in the area have to swap their fields with Björn Sippel every year so that the organizational masterpiece can succeed and the poppies can bloom on an area the size of twenty football fields. You can then wander through this floral splendor on narrow paths that are laid out with straw. (...from Meißnerhof)
