Vadertje Haak originated from the fear of mothers to lose their children in rivers or wells.

To convince children not to swim alone, the Belgians have created a terrifying legend: that of Pépé Crochet, a lake monster who catches children in the water with the help of his hook-shaped hands.

What does his legend tell us? One day, a woman sends her 8-year-old child to fetch water from the well. It was winter and it was getting dark. After some time, the mother is concerned that the boy has not returned. She goes looking for him and finds him at the well, wrestling with a monster with a hook that tries to drag the boy into the well. The mother fought hard to free and retrieve her son. He will stay off the water for the rest of his life!
