A sad page in the history of the island of Ischia, that of 8 March 1947. A British military aircraft of the 'Royal Air Force' - used for the transport of civilians, which left Cairo and headed for Rome - crashed into Mount Epomeo. Possible cause was the thick fog, which forced the pilot of the "Douglas Dakota IV (DC-3)" to travel at low altitude.

It was a day to forget for the green island and not only for the 13 people who lost their lives in the accident (5 crew members and 8 passengers). In fact, many islanders went to the site, with the area pervaded by flames, who cynically indulged in acts of looting, stealing valuables, money and whatever they could find in their hands. Stories that are, to say the least, macabre have come down to us, one in particular that tells of people who even cut off fingers to steal gold rings. Demonstrating the fact that in Ischia history is not always synonymous with events to be proud of.
