The Sint Anna Tunel, built between 1931 and 1933, is a pedestrian and cycle tunnel which passes under the Scheldt and provides access to Antwerp from the other bank of the river.
An Art Deco side, its escalators a mix of steel and wood, a surrealist atmosphere...

The Sint-Annatunnel – or Pedestrian Tunnel – is a real historical gem with its authentic wooden escalators. Walk or cycle along this eye-catcher from the city centre to the Left Bank, where you have a beautiful view of the Antwerp skyline.

Historical explanation: As early as 1874, the people of Antwerp agreed on a connection between the left and right banks of the city. There were many plans to build a bridge over the Scheldt, but they were always cancelled. Mainly because a bridge would hinder shipping traffic too much.

Ultimately, it took until 1931 before the decision was made in favour of a tunnel.

To this day, most parts of the entrance buildings and the tunnel are still original, from the warning signs to the fences.
