    The Sheep Pasture incline house housed the steam beam engine which used to winch the trucks up the hill from the junction with the Cromford Canal and railway. This section of the railway was completed in 1830, it was the first section on the line from here to Whaley Bridge. The railway was used to transport the minerals and stone from the mines in the Peak District. The railway closed in 1967.

      Sheep Pasture Incline engine house
      At the top of the 1320 yards 1:8 Sheep Pasture Incline this engine house was built in 1828 to house a Butterley twin cylinder beam haulage engine like the one preserved at Middleton Top. However in 1883 the beam engine was beyond economic repair and it was replaced, in the same house, by a two cylinder horizontal engine converted from the motion of a Ramsbottom DX class 0-6-0 locomotive with 17" x 24" cylinders. This began work in February 1884. This was finally replaced by a 100 horsepower electric hauler in1964 at a cost of £31.7k. This was retired in 1967 with the closure of the Cromford & High Peak Railway.

            A very restful area with benches to rest on while you take in the wonderful views.

              The engine house is but a shell these days but a waypoint nonetheless. Great views over the valley make this a get place for a break. Some seating.

                Tough hill to climb at constant incline but worth it when get to top, view are amazing
