In October 2011, PALM Belgian Craft Brewers (Palm Breweries / Brouwerij Palm) created a hop field along the Leirekensroute in Steenhuffel in order to meet its own hop needs in the long term.
The realization of the hop field is part of the re-recognition of hops and Palm's innovation projects. The proximity of the historical hop region near Aalst and Asse also contributes to this. However, the number of hop farmers in the region today can be counted on one hand. That is why a hop field was created to remind all passers-by, visitors, tourists, local residents, etc. of this rich culture.

The hop field is 35 ares in size and has about 800 hop plants of the 'Hallertau Mittelfrüh' variety.
The planting was done by Jan Vermeir from Opwijk and the Temmerman family, renowned hop farmers from Erembodegem. The team from the nearby Diepensteyn Stud Farm takes care of the cultivation. For the treatment, the brewery calls on Geert Claerbout, a hop grower and processor from the Poperinge region.
On 5 September 2012, the first harvest of the hop field was picked early in the morning.
Since then, the 'hop festivals' have taken place every year with a public hop picking.
