Frans Naerebout is one of the greatest naval heroes Vlissingen has ever produced. He was a pilot and saved lives. On Boulevard de Ruyter in Vlissingen, where you have a beautiful view of the arriving and departing pilot boats, there is a statue of him in action, ready to throw someone a rope.
From fisherman to pilot and lifeguard
Frans Naerebout had humble origins. He started his working life in the industry in which his father also worked: fishing. But over the years he worked his way up to pilot. And that is how he became nationally famous: for rescuing sailors on the Western Scheldt.

It was July 27, 1779. The heavily loaded East Indiaman Woestduin was almost back in home port Middelburg after a long journey from Batavia. Then they walked on a sandbank in the Western Scheldt. There was a fierce storm and the ship was constantly engulfed by high waves. That evening it was a fair in Vlissingen, but you didn't often see such a spectacle and the population went out to look at the ship in distress. The crew seemed hopelessly lost. Nevertheless, Frans Naerebout, together with his brother Jacob and seven others, took the risk. After a few failed attempts, they managed to save 71 of the 129 crew members with their small ship. The next morning he saved another 16, bringing the total to 87.
