After the coaling was completed in 1993, the opencast mine was filled with overburden from other opencast mines in the region, in particular the Hambach opencast mine. The recultivation has been largely completed since 2004.
The areas in the south with the Wiedenfelder Höhe dump were restored for agricultural use. In the northwest, an extensive 120 hectare recreational area with the Peringssee was created near Bedburg.

The Peringsmaar is an artificial lake in an opencast mining hole on the recultivation area of the Fortuna-Garsdorf opencast mine. The lake is also colloquially called “Peringssee”.
