There are many stories about the Schnapsbuche, a red beech in the Spittergrund near Tambach-Dietharz. The farmers who made hay in the meadows in the valley are said to have enjoyed their lunch in the shade of this huge beech tree. They probably also drank a schnapps or two. Klaus Nußbicker, a member of the town's history society, was told this story in his childhood. In other accounts, it is carters who rested under the beech tree and fortified themselves with a "short drink" for the journey over the ridge of the Thuringian Forest.
