The "Innere Holztor" in Gelnhausen protected the city to the north. It was secured by a portcullis and part of the city wall. The name wooden gate has nothing to do with a wooden gate. It is based on the situation at the exit of the city towards Büdinger Wald. From there came the once so valuable wood into the city.

The first stone city wall around Gelnhausen dates back to 1220.
In addition, the city was secured with shell towers that had a square floor plan.
The side facing away from the city was built of stone, the side facing the city was only closed with wooden shells for cost reasons.
