Heidelberg Castle Ruins + Castle Park 🚴‍♂️

Heidelberg Castle is one of the most famous ruins in Germany and the landmark of the city of Heidelberg. Until its destruction in the War of the Palatinate Succession, it was the residence of the Electors of the Palatinate. Since its destruction by the soldiers of Louis XIV in 1689 and its demolition by French pioneers on September 6, 1693, Heidelberg Castle has only been partially restored. After lightning set fire to the partially renovated complex on June 24, 1764, restoration efforts were abandoned. The castle ruins, built of red Neckar Valley sandstone, rise 80 meters above the valley floor on the northern slope of the Königstuhl and dominate the view of the old town. The Ottheinrichsbau, one of the palace buildings of the castle, is considered one of the most important German Renaissance buildings.
