Located in the immediate vicinity of the palace, the triangular site of the Botanical Garden was created by fitting it into the Karlsruhe city plan. The display houses and the arched gateway mark one of the rays radiating from the palace – outside the garden, this radiance continues along Bismarckstrasse.

The Orangery, with its distinctive dome, was built between 1853 and 1857 by the architect Heinrich Hübsch and served as a winter shelter for citrus trees. Since 1930, it has been part of the Karlsruhe State Art Gallery – today, it houses art from the second half of the 20th century to the present day.

Like the entire complex, the greenhouses were destroyed in the Second World War. After reconstruction in the 1950s, they were converted into display houses for the public. From 2014 to 2018, the greenhouses underwent extensive renovations and now appear as they did when they were originally built. The three glasshouses represent three climate zones: the former cold house displays camellias and succulents, while there is also a palm house and a warm house with tropical plants.
