The name of the town has origins that date back to the Greek-Sicilian divinity Trea-Jana, venerated in the ancient Roman town of Trea. This city, which became a municipality in the mid-1st century BC. after having been a prefecture since 268 BC. with the conquest of Piceno, it extended into ancient Rome along the Via Prolaquense, one kilometer west of the modern city, currently occupied by the Sanctuary of the Santissimo Crocifisso. The original parish church of the sanctuary was built on the remains of the temple of Isis. The sanctuary houses a fifteenth-century crucifix considered miraculous, attributed according to tradition to an angel.

Treia is famous for the game of bracelet ball, an ancient sport practiced by the nobility but also followed with enthusiasm by the people. From Treia you have a beautiful view of the silent Marche, simultaneously embracing the view of the sea and the Sibillini mountains.
