      What's what in space? (2)
      A PLANET is a celestial body that orbits the sun and whose mass is sufficiently large that they have assumed an approximately spherical shape. In addition, as the dominant body, it should have "cleared" the orbit of almost all other objects through its gravitational field. There are eight of them in our solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
      Similar celestial bodies orbiting foreign stars (suns) are accordingly called exoplanets.

      A DWARF PLANET orbits the sun like its “big siblings” and appears somewhat spherical due to its gravity. In contrast to those, however, it has not yet been able to "clean up" its orbit of other larger objects. Five celestial bodies are currently considered dwarf planets: Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris (Transneptunian objects) and Ceres (largest object in the asteroid belt).

      MOON, on the other hand, is what we call those astronomical objects that are similar to a planet, but as a permanent satellite or trabant (companion) orbit around one instead of directly around the sun. Tidal forces act reciprocally between the mother planet and the moon, moons influence the stability of ring systems and their rotation adapts over time to the orbital frequency of the planet. The number of moons is noted on the planetary panels.

      An ASTEROID is a small body that moves in an orbit around the sun, but is significantly smaller than a dwarf planet and cannot form a spherical shape due to lack of mass. Most orbit in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, the best known include Pallas, Vesta, Juno, Iris, Hebe, Hygiea, Astraea and many more. m.

      Such an object is called a METEOROID if it is only a few millimeters to a few meters in size. If they cross the earth's orbit and get into the atmosphere, you can see them light up as meteors or shooting stars.

      Finally, a METEORITE is a solid body that has fallen from space onto the earth's surface.
