War Cemetery Merode "Marienbildchen"
The cemetery is located on the leading to Klosterruine Schwarzenbroich Marienweg on the northern edge of the former combat area Hürtgenwald.
The name
Marienbildchen is reminiscent of the princess of Merode-Westerloo, who had mounted on a oak a picture of Mary, which has now been replaced by a wooden statue of Mary and is also the station of an annual procession.
A total of 226 fallen German soldiers are resting on this forest cemetery under the protective roof of the trees: 128 in individual graves and 98 in two collective graves; 170 are known by name. They fell in the bitter fighting from November to mid-December 1944 between Merode and Wenau at the "Battle of Hürtgenwald". Many of the casualties are 18- to 20-year-old paratroopers. "
