The flora and fauna of the Rabensteiner Land

Rabenstein is located in the "Rabenstein Forest" nature reserve, which is essentially the Rabenstein mountain range that separates the northern edge of the Ore Mountain Basin from the southern edge of the Central Saxon loess loam area.

The broad Rabensteiner mountain range drops steeply over 100m to the Erzgebirge basin. The altitude is 380 to 485m above sea level.

The climate has an annual average of 8 to 9 °C and annual precipitation between 700 and 780 mm. The southern flank of the ridge is favored by radiation.

Geologically, the Rabenstein mountain range is part of the Saxon Granulite Mountains with mica slate limestone and quartz rock occurring in the area.

Some spring streams flow out of the Rabenstein forest area, in the eastern part the Tränkbach and the Eisenbach, among others, which feed the reservoir and the group of ponds at the golf pool (“Schwarze Teiche” and “Schäfteich”).

The vegetation consists of 50% forest, the rest are not cultivated, fields and meadows. Common woody plants are birch, mountain ash, larch, pedunculate oak, trembling paplar, black paplar, black pine, occasionally hornbeam. In the bush layer raspberry, blackberry, blueberry and heather. Floristically noteworthy is the occurrence of rare ferns and clubmoss, montane species such as sycamore, arnica, orange-red hawkweed, mountain leaf pea, as well as purple loosestrife, water buttercup, donkey spurge, cruciferous spurge, valerian, golden nettle, bittersweet nightshade, variegated thistles, red foxglove, wood willowherb, and a species-rich one meadow and weed flora.

The fauna in the forests consists of roe deer, wild boar, fox, badger, occasionally beech marten, ermine and weasel, squirrel and field mouse are also reported. Common species of rodents and insectivores, including bats, are contained throughout the area.

The bird world is rich in species, including rare breeding birds such as blackcap, wood warbler, marsh warbler, swallow-tailed tit, lesser spotted woodpecker, green woodpecker, short-toed treecreeper, red-backed shrike, meadow and tree pipit, moorhen, gray heron, and some species of birds of prey. Notable as winter visitors and migrants are sidetail, great gray shrike, kingfisher, hawfinch, warbler, white stork, sandpiper, whinchat, cruciferous sparrow, golden oriole, rough-legged buzzard, and red kite.

In addition to the well-known amphibians, spadefoot toads, natterjack toads, tree frogs, fire salamanders, mountain lizards, smooth snakes and adders occasionally appear.

The Stahringer beech, Dreinbuche and Mondscheinlinde are mentioned in the literature as natural monuments in the landscape protection area mentioned. In addition, the extremely rare glowing moss (Schististega osmundacea) in the rock caves on the Totenstein.

As a local recreation area, the Rabenstein Forest is extremely important for Chemnitz and the surrounding towns. The high-lying forest, due to the prevailing westerly winds without industrial emissions, the unusual distant views, especially from the Pfaffenberg (428m) and the bathing opportunities ensure recreation and relaxation in a variety of ways.
