In 1992, the last mine in the Benelux closed its doors in Zolder. However, it was the first place where the protected buildings were given a new purpose. Together with the shaft tower, the Monnoyer chimney and the mortuary, they remain visible relics of the 'black gold'. The power station 'Watt 17' was expertly restored. The multifunctional building 'De Verdieping' houses a passive school, the CVO and in the restored winding machine building you can visit the heritage walk ZLDR AIR FACTORY for free. The Market Square comes to life every second and fourth Wednesday of the month during the multicultural market 'MijnMarkt'.

On the site (part 1):

Shaft towers built from 1924 (shaft I) and 1925 (shaft II), to a design by Lemaire (Châtelineau), by the Luxembourg construction company Wurth. Made of metal trusswork according to the trestle type, with an open lift shaft (above the shaft) in front of both trestle muscles; two rearward-facing trestle legs. Metal arch roof. Due to the smaller useful shaft diameter (diameter 5 metres, compared to a diameter of 6 metres for shaft II), shaft trestle I only has two cable pulleys and a single lift shaft.

Reception buildings (concrete and metal trusswork filled with concrete facade surfaces) built under and between the legs of the shaft trestle (1925). To the south of the shaft towers: building for the hoisting machines and compressors, to a design by S.A. Charbonnages de Mariemont (technical service), 30.07.1924. As adjoining and strongly symmetric conceived spaces and facades: basement and one and a half storeys in brickwork and concrete, characterised by large industrial arched windows; saddle roofs.

Current coal washing and screening plant, extended from 1937-1938, subsequently renovated and enlarged. Foundation study by Pieux Franki, metal skeleton Evence Coppée & Cie, Brussels. First schlambassins and cisterns date from the same period: concrete constructions designed and executed by Thirion & Delcominette, Amay-Quiévrain.

Boiler house could not be visited, but the concrete chimney of the old (now disappeared) boiler house east of the hoisting buildings should be mentioned: twelve-sided reinforced concrete construction, with a height of 55 metres, designed 26.06.1913 (Monnoyer?).

The power station, (1924, designed by architect Dewandre) is a remarkable concrete hall construction, with a brick facade and covered by a metal truss.

On the site (part 2):

Concrete chimney-shaped cooling tower of 6,000 cubic metres per hour, built in 1937 by the Société Hamon (successor Leon Monnoyer & Fils, Brussels). The same company also built the imposing and dominant cooling tower of 7,000 cubic metres per hour in 1952-1953.

The workshop located between the two shafts is one of the original refrigeration plants, intended for the freezing drillings of the company "Franco-Belge". Built by the S.A. des Ateliers de Construction Joseph Paris, Marchienne-au-Pont (design: 15.09.1916): hall in metal frame and brickwork, approximately 55 x 17 metres, covered by a saddle roof on metal truss.

Bathroom and changing rooms (not visited) from around 1925, designed by the technical department of the Mariemont coal mine. Offices in business style, 1937.

Deathhouse near the mine buildings, located south of the offices and west of the power station against the Koolmijnlaan.

A water tower of the Monnoyer type is also located on the site of the coal mine.
