Beautiful memorial in granite for 'De Redders' van Schouwen-Duiveland - 1953.
The granite monument is a silhouette of a man with a sou'wester.

Historical interpretation: Since 1862, a lifeboat has been stationed in Burghsluis by the Royal South Holland Shipwreck Rescue Company (K.Z.H.M.R.S.) in Rotterdam. Often at great risk to their own lives, the skippers and crew members have carried out countless rescues. Many seafarers owe their lives to the courage and perseverance of the rescuers.
On the so-called bolt (remainder of a fallen dike) is a monument in memory of the rescuers of Schouwen-Duiveland. It stands on the spot where the lifeboat left. The monument was designed by Mrs. Miems van Citters from Burgh.

The 'Tribute to the Rescuers of Schouwen-Duiveland' is a monument commemorating the brave people who courageously risked their lives to save others during the 1953 storm surge disaster. The flood on February 1, 1953 hit the Dutch province of Zeeland hard, with Schouwen-Duiveland being particularly affected. The monument features the silhouette of a man wearing a sou'wester hat to honor the sea rescuers and volunteers who contributed to the rescue despite dangerous conditions. It is symbolic of the many unknown helpers who were instrumental in saving people from the floods.

The monument can be found in Burghsluis, a place with a long history of sea rescue. Since 1862, a lifeboat was stationed here, which was used in shipping accidents and during the disaster. Today it remains as a lasting reminder of the victims and rescuers of the flood and invites visitors to learn more about the history of the region, which was profoundly shaped by this event.
